Who we are

  • We are a group of citizens who formed a charitable association and opened learning centres in Simmering and Kagran, with the aim of supporting socially disadvantaged children and juveniles in their educational needs. Thanks to the efforts of our honorary tutors these children now have improved chances for a better future.

  • Every month we support approximately 500 children from 25 nations, of whom 60% were born in Vienna. For more than 90% German is not the original language.

  • We offer more than 1500 individual teaching hours a month, adding to a total of over 140.000 hours of free tuition since the WIENER LERNTAFEL was launched. Currently about 250 honorary tutors work with the children, mostly on a one to one basis.

  • The WIENER LERNTAFEL has become a regular meeting place for the children and their tutors – and an irreplaceable component of daily life. The youngsters come happily and of their own accord, many of them daily.

How we work

  • Most tuition takes place in 1 to 1 Units, enabling us to target individual requirements.

  • To allow already advanced children help with their homework, we also provide group tables for additional support, where one tutor works with 2 to 4 children. While receiving all necessary help, the children are therefore encouraged to work independently.

  • We organize regular workshops for 6 to 10 children, focusing on various themes such as examination anxiety, memory and learning techniques or arts and crafts. We also organize excursions to museums and other cultural institutions.

  • We offer our honorary teaching staff pedagogic training and coaching, providing also the opportunity to exchange ideas and experiences in regular social meetings.

The Learning Helpers/Honorary Tutors

WLLernhelferin2

The WIENER LERNTAFEL could not exist without the engagement of our 250 active honorary tutors. They are between 15 and 79 years of age. 20% of them have a teaching qualification, 40% are retired, and 50% have a university degree.

The Team – Learning Centre Simmering

  • Karin Tikovits forms the hub of parent-tutor relations. She runs the learning centre with passion, is responsible for the support and training of the tutors, and keeps an eye on the quality of tuition. She has a diploma in project management and has spent many working years in administration. Right from the start, Karin has been the heart and soul of the WIENER LERNTAFEL.

I have always worked towards the establishment of fairness on all issues. Many children suffer disadvantages due to their origin and related vulnerability, resulting in weaknesses at school and failure in later life. I did not hesitate for a second when I was asked to assist in establishing the WIENER LERNTAFEL, creating an institution that achieves the very opposite.

The Board

  • DDr. Stefan Unterberger<br />
Chairman

When I look around the LERNTAFEL and see the children exchanging dialogues, laughing, working with their heads bent down in concentration over their school books – then I know that we must be doing something right here.

    DDr. Stefan Unterberger
    Chairman
  • Gheri Sackler Deputy Chairwoman

Our target is to give children the possibility to live out their potential – because only education for all will enable us to look forward to a secure future.

    Gheri Sackler Deputy Chairwoman
  • Florian Selimov Secretary

The WIENER LERNTAFEL is an island for children who have no anchor in the rough sea of school life. I work with engagement towards convincing as many children as possible that: Learning is fun.

    Florian Selimov Secretary
  • Elisabeth Faber Treasurer

At school no teacher is in a position to provide every pupil with undivided attention and individual tuition. This is where the WIENER LERNTAFEL comes in: total immersion with each and every child in 1:1 tuition units.

    Elisabeth Faber Treasurer
  • Mag. Martin Wolf Msc. Deputy Treasurer.

For me the WIENER LERNTAFEL is a place where children can pick up tools to shape their futures and design their own lives.

Mag. Martin Wolf Msc. Deputy Treasurer.
  • Franz Steininger, Deputy Secretary

Educational equality must be more than just a catch phrase. Giving children a chance to influence their own lives is my motivation for supporting the WIENER LERNTAFEL.

DDr. Stefan Unterberger – Chairman

Stefan Unterberger has worked for years as consultant, lector and communications researcher. He was for 2 years on the Board of the Wiener Tafel (a parallel charity providing food for the poor). Inspired by a comparative survey on poverty, school and vocational education for pupils in Austria, Hungary and Slovakia, the social scientist gradually established his own private initiative. In 2010, together with Gheri Sackler, he founded the WIENER LERNTAFEL.

Gheri Sackler – Deputy Chairwoman

Gheri Sackler has been engaged for considerable time in art and education projects in Europe and the USA. She has supported the WIENER LERNTAFEL since its founding. In the past we have profited from her connections in the art world, which have enabled us to realize a number of creative projects. Together with sponsors from her environment, she has contributed magnanimously to establishing a financial basis for the WIENER LERNTAFEL.

Florian Selimov – Secretary

For 22 years he has run his own learning institute in Vienna. He is responsible for the training and coaching of our honorary tutors.

Franz Steininger – Deputy Secretary

Having studied economics and spent many years in IT, Franz Steininger is one of the WIENER LERNTAFEL’s most popular tutors and has been on the Board since May 2015, where he will support us for the next two years. He looks after our electronic media, provides structure for our fund raising activities and is a contact person for our sponsors.

Elisabeth Faber – Treasurer

She is a primary school teacher and communications trainer. She assured that the WIENER LERNTAFEL is in the official list of privileged grant receivers, as displayed on the website of the Ministry of Education.

Mag. Martin Wolf Msc. – Deputy Treasurer

Martin Wolf has gathered decades of experience as a top manager in major concerns and was active internationally for many years. For the last 6 years he has been working as a management consultant in Vienna. Martin Wolf is our correspondent with all donors, sponsors and long term partners.
